The Maple Leafs finally made it to the second round for the first time since 2004. This is in large part due to the fantastic work of GM Kyle Dubas at the trade deadline.

He made good moves that gave his team the edge needed to win in the playoffs.

If the Leafs hadn't won against Tampa Bay, Dubas' job would be in a very precarious position.

But they won and talks about extending Dubas' contract are blazing.

However, something else could get in the way of Dubas' future in Toronto.

Insider Reveals Why the Leafs are Hesitant to Extend Dubas' Contract

During an episode of the 32 Thoughts podcast, Elliotte Friedman made an important revelation about what's holding back the Leafs from re-signing Kyle Dubas.

"Friedman on 32TP says one of the 3 owners of the Leafs wanted to extend Dubas, and the other two blocked it. When Babcock was fired and he still had $25M left on his deal, it changed everything when it came to contracts."

Indeed, Mike Babcock was fired in 2019 but got paid until this season. This isn't good for an organization: to pay someone for nothing.

We can understand that the Leafs don't want the same thing to happen with Dubas.

They may have a change of heart if the Leafs' playoff run continues beyond the second round.
