Insider Predicts Marner's Next Deal With Maple Leafs And Fans Can't Believe It
Insider Elliotte Friedman recently spoke on what Auston Matthews' contract means for the rest of the NHL and specifically the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Marner's Worrysome Future Demands
Recently, Elliotte Friedman spoke on the Auston Matthews contract and what it means for the league. Obviously, it ups the barrier for how expensive a contract can be and players will now be more willing to ask for more money.
With the Leafs committing $13.25 million to Matthews, fans are becoming worried of what they will commit to Marner. The last time Marner's contract was up for discussion the Leafs signed Auston Matthews to his $11.6 million deal and Marner was quickly able to negotiate for a similar price at $10.9 million.
Friedman commented on the issue:
«What is Marner's next number? Because he was the closest one to Matthews. When Matthews signed for 11.634 AAV all of a sudden Marner became close to an $11M player, so now Matthews' number is 13.25, what's Marner's number? Is it 13.249999?»
What Range For Marner?
It is highly unlikely that Marner will be paid more than Matthews but there is always a chance. If Marner were to have an offensive explosion of say 125 points and Matthews stays in the sub 100 range, we could see him get upwards of $13.25.
However, if we see Matthews return to form and Marner sit right below him in terms of player calibler, we could certainly see a $12-13 million contract for Marner which would make him a top 5 highest paid NHLer.
