A new report via insider David Pagnotta claims that if Marner has another big season this year, we could see him asking for more than what Auston Matthews is projected to earn on his next contract.
With Auston Matthews' next contract likely to make him the highest-paid payer in the NHL, it would seem unreasonable for Marner to ask for more than that, but there's more to it.
Marner is considered by many to be the best winger in the NHL, and he could use that as leverage in his next contract negotiation. If he goes on a tear for the foreseeable future, putting up say 1.25 points-per-game, it's not all that unrealistic to say that Marner could ask for more than Matthews.
The fans reacting to this report did NOT seem pleased with the news and made sure everyone knew it. Leafs fans tend to be vocal by nature, but it seems like they really don't want to pay Mitch this much money.
And this was just some of the replies!
It's clear that there's an ego problem in Toronto, and something needs to change fast. While their star power is legit, they simply cannot afford to pay each of these guys over $10 million, let alone have three players add up to more than $39 million per year.
Marner is an amazing player, but the Leafs need to think long and hard about what they really want to do here.
