After the Pittsburgh Penguins placed Alex Nylander on waivers, the Leafs didn't take the opportunity to sign him. However, here is why the Leafs should take a serious look at acquiring him.
Last year, the majority of Alex Nylander's time was spent in the AHL, where he recorded 25 goals and 25 assists for 50 points in 55 games. Nylander is a big forward, sitting at 6'1" and 192 pounds.
With William being a UFA after this season, bringing in Alex could be a piece of the puzzle that entices him to stay, and could even get William to sign at a discount.
Obviously, the Leafs are already packed with depth forwards trying to make the squad. Guys like Robertson are already nearly NHL-ready, but the depth of the Leafs prevents them from coming up.
The Leafs could, though, make a trade for Nylander midway through the season, and start him with the Marlies. This could go a long way in securing the other Nylander, and they could get him at a reasonable price, given his reassignment to the AHL.
