This former Maple Leaf has signed a new contract in Europe, and the league might surprise you.


French Ice Hockey Federation



Former Leafs UFA Ryan O'Connell has signed a one-year contract with Toulouse-Blagnac of the French Ice Hockey Federation Division 2.


O'Connell was drafted by the Leafs in the 7th round by the Leafs in 2017. He has been playing in the NCAA for the past several years, with eligibility likely being extended due to Covid.

Toronto Maple Leafs' unrestricted free agent (UFA) D Ryan O'Connell has signed a one-year contract with Toulouse-Blagnac (FFHG DII).


O'Connell was held to three points, all assists, across 35 games for Michigan Tech (NCAA) last season. O'Connell was picked 203rd-overall in 2017, and went unsigned by Toronto as of August 15 after 152 collegiate games.

Off to France



O'Connell will be heading to play in the second division of the French Ice Hockey Federation. Prior to this, O'Connell played one year at Michigan Tech, and 4 years at the Ohio State University, both in the NCAA. He recorded 28 points during his NCAA career over a total of 152 games.
