William Nylander's next contract will be expensive but potentially too expensive which would result in Brad Treliving shipping him for maximum return.

Nylander Proposed To Go To Canadian Team

William Nylander is coming off of a career year. Scoring 87 points and finishing top 20 in NHL scoring, Nylander has established himself as a premium player in the NHL.

Going into the final year of his contract, Nylander will be commanding a massive pay raise from whomever he signs for. While Brad Treliving would like to keep Nylander, if he asks for too much money, Treliving will be forced to move him.

In a recent trade proposal posted to capfriendly.com, it would have Treliving dealing with his former team.

Trade Analysis

This trade completes two main things for the Leafs. It solidifies their defense with the addition of Hanifin and it gives the bottom six some much-needed age and leadership in Backlund.

Hanifin and Backlund are both entering the final years of their deals where Hanifin will require a pay raise and Backlund will likely require a pay cut.

This also makes sure that Nylander does not walk for nothing and it gives the Leafs a top-pairing two-way defenseman who can complement anybody.

The Flames do this trade because they get the best player in the deal and they have proven they want to win now. They also have a backlog in defensemen and a retool with Nylander up front would give them more offensive prowess.

Final Thoughts

This trade is beneficial for both teams but it only occurs if the Leafs cannot extend Nylander. If the Leafs can extend Nylander along with Matthews and Marner, they will roll with the core four for the foreseeable future.
