The Maple Leafs drafted Luke Schenn 5th overall back in 2008. He thought he would have played his first playoff game in a Leafs jersey years before he actually did just last year.
With Schenn's leadership and physicality, the Leafs were able to win a playoff series for the first time in nearly two decades. While he was not an X-factor, he was rock solid and proved he was worth being extended.
However, from a recent report from David Alter, the Leafs and Schenn are "not close" to a contract extension.
The Leafs already have six defensemen under contract for next year but Schenn would likely find himself on the second pairing if he decides to resign. If he resigns for multiple years, he could slide down into a third-pairing role as he is 34 already.
