Change is on the horizon for the Toronto Maple Leafs, that's certain. However, what form this change will take remains unclear. One thing is certain though: any change will undoubtedly center around Auston Matthews.
The Leafs' star forward and Rocket Richard trophy winner is one of the top players in the league, earning a salary that reflects this.
Earning $11,640,250, he is one of the highest paid players in history. In a year's time, he's due for a raise. Will he stay with the Toronto Maple Leafs to receive it? That remains uncertain.
The early indications are not promising, yet, according to Luke Fox, this could easily change if the new general manager's plan proves persuasive.
If Matthews finds it unconvincing, he could exit quickly. Luke Fox posits that Matthews might not stay onboard given the prevailing uncertainty within the organization.
It wouldn't be the first instance of an American player leaving Canada to play at home.
Matthew Tkachuk did it last season, and now he's playing in the Stanley Cup Final.
It's remarkable how things work out, isn't it?
