Matthews, an Arizona native, has been an ambassador for Arizona hockey since he was drafted the the NHL. He has been involved with the Coyotes before he was drafted, being close with Shane Doan when he played there.

Prior to Matthews signing his extension just before the season began, many rumours circulated that he was interested in heading back to the Coyotes to play for his hometown team. That rumour was obviously squashed when he signed his extension with Toronto.
