This season Auston Matthews is on an absolute tear when it comes to points and goals. His impressive play has led him to be on pace to break an over-30-year-old plateau.
Matthews On An Incredible Goal Scoring Pace
Auston Matthews is on his way to his second 60-goal season of his NHL career. He currently leads the league in goals with 25 ahead of players like Brock Boeser, Nikita Kucherov, and David Pastrnak.
Matthews has put on a shooting clinic this season. His shooting highlights have left fans in awe each time he puts the puck in the back of the net.
As of now, Auston Matthews is not only on pace for 60 goals but an accomplishment that has not been seen in over 30 years in the NHL.
Matthews Approaches Insane Accomplishment Not Seen In 30 Years
With his current goal-scoring pace Auston Matthews would end the season with 72 total goals. This would be the first time a player has eclipsed 70 goals in a season since Alexander Mogilny in 1992-93.
If Matthews can reach this feat he would cement himself already as one of the most elite goalscorers in NHL history. To make it to 70 goals he would need to keep up his current unheard-of pace. If there is a player in the NHL currently who could keep up the pace Matthews is likely the top option.
