Goaltending is widely regarded as one of the most difficult things to do in any sport. This is especially true in hockey where giving up less than 3 goals in a game is outstanding. One elite goalie is now bending the rules to even the playing field.

Vasilevskiy Makes An Equipment Changes

Training camp has kicked off for the NHL this week. When watching the first day of the Tampa Bay Lightning's camp media and fans made an interesting discovery. Andrei Vasilevskiy had changed up his equipment specifically his skates.

In previous seasons Vasilevskiy had worn skates with white skate holders. To begin training camp he has now switched to black skate holders. To a casual fan, this switch might not be a big deal but to some hardcore fans, it was a huge deal.

Vasilevskiy Creates Controversy With New Skates

Since making the switch the internet has been in heavy debate over Vasilevskiy's skates. Many believe this should be illegal because the color of the skate holders can hide the puck. This means on plays where the puck is close to going over the line Vasilveskiy can put his skate near the puck. This would then make any reviews potentially done less conclusive.

Potentially going to make it harder to see the puck over the line if it's along or under his skate.

No rule on the color there... only requirement is that the stick knob has to be white tape

While people with this opinion do have a point skaters are allowed to have black tape on their stick which could potentially impair the goaltender from seeing the puck.

If goalie skates are outlawed based on color where does it stop with equipment color? As the season goes on if Vasilevskiy gets into any of these situations it could be interesting to see the league's response.
