In the race to acquire one of the best defensemen in the NHL, the Pittsburgh Penguins have emerged as favorites to win the sweepstakes. Through this process, they have been trying to figure out a trade offer.
Petry The One To Go?
The San Jose Sharks have been working on a trade for Norris Trophy winner Erik Karlsson and the Penguins are among the finalists to get the deal done. Petry's name has been thrown around a little bit in terms of being a salary dump to clear room for Karlsson's hefty $11.5 million AAV deal. A journalist by the name of Max Miller has proposed what a three-team deal could look like in order for the Pens to acquire Karlsson.
"San Jose would receive Jeff Petry, with 35% of his salary being retained by Nashville, as well as Mikael Granlund, with 25% of his salary being retained by Pittsburgh.
In addition, San Jose would get Drew O'Connor (a restricted free agent) and the Penguins' first-round choice for the year 2025.
The Penguins, for their part, would receive Erik Karlsson, with the Sharks agreeing to retain half of his salary, or $5.75 million.
And the Preds in this transaction? They would receive Casey DeSmith, draft picks for the years 2024 and 2025, and part of Petry's salary." Predators Get Involved
As you can see in this suggestion, the Nashville Predators get in on this trade in order to make it financially work all around. They end up sending forward Mikael Granlund to the Sharks and they get Penguins goalie Casey DeSmith draft picks, and parts of Petry's salary in return.
If a trade like this ends up getting agreed on, this would be huge for the league and would make for the Penguins to be a scary team to watch out for. We will see how this situation develops.
