A Pittsburgh Penguins forward has ditched the NHL in favor of playing in Europe and having a guaranteed contract.

Wagner Ditches North America

This past offseason the Pittsburgh Penguins brought forward Austin Wagner in on a PTO and has had him on the roster but he remained unsigned. While the PTO could keep Wagner around for a bit of time, Wagner made it clear he wanted to play so he left North America and the Penguins in favor of playing in Sweden.

Forward Austin Wagner, who was in the Penguins' training camp on a professional tryout, signs with IK Oskarshamn in the Swedish Hockey League.

Wagner was initially a fourth-round pick of the LA Kings in the 2015 draft and carved out a role within the Kings' bottom six in 2018-19. Since then he has gone on to play in four NHL seasons amassing 178 games, 171 of which were in LA.

He will now set his sights on winning an SHL championship with IK Oskarshamn and hopefully impressing enough so that he is able to earn an NHL contract later down the line.
