Gary Bettman recently screwed over future hall-of-famer Marc-Andre Fleury with this move that blocks him from supporting a cause near to his personal life.

Gary Bettman Blocks Marc-Andre Fleury From Wearing Helmet In Support Of Native American Heritage Night

The Minnesota Wild are set to host their Native American Heritage night tonight against the Colorado Avalanche. In support of the celebration, Marc Andre-Fleury had a special mask designed by a Native American designer. Fleury, whose wife is Native American, had planned to wear the helmet for warmups.

However, Gary Bettman and the NHL have decided to block Fleury from doing so, even in warmups.

As part of Native American Heritage Night and to honor his wife, who is native, Marc-Andre Fleury had a custom-designed mask created by Cole Redhorse Taylor. Mask quotes his dad on back, has names of his kids.

He's bummed the NHL has informed him he can't even wear in warmups

Fleury had considered wearing the helmet in spite of the risk of receiving a fine, however, the NHL and Gary Bettman took even further steps to ensure this didn't happen, threatening significant fines to the Wild organization.

Marc-Andre Fleury indicated he was planning to wear the mask anyway and pay the fine. The NHL then threatened the Wild organization with an additional significant fine.

The Decision to Block Fleury From Wearing Native American Heritage Mask A Peek Into Larger Issues With Bettman and the NHL

The NHL is now on backtrack mode after decisions to ban players from showing their support for causes and special events. Earlier this year, the NHL made a decision to ban players from wearing Pride Tape to show their support for the LGBTQ+ movement. Although this was reversed, it took one player to defy the NHL to do so.

All it took was Travis Dermott being that dude and the NHL completely backed down.

NEVER forget how the NHL was threatening to punish players for pride tape. What an embarrassing saga for hockey.

The NHL is now in a power struggle with players who rightly want to show their support for causes they hold close to them. Its clear that the NHL and NHLPA will have to find an agreement on the best policy moving forward.
