Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid could be on the verge of re-signing according to two well-connected podcast hosts, and it's likely to happen in a few weeks.
Every team would throw the bank at him, and for good reason. But there's only one team who can make it out as the winner, and his current team holds the equalizer being that they can offer a massive deal with their captain who is already so engrained in the community.
Why the Timing of McDavid's Extension Could Be a Game-Changer for the Oilers
But if it's a question of 'when' not 'if' McDavid will sign an extension, when can we expect things? We thought things would happen early July but with both camps keeping their cards close to their chest, fans are left wondering.
We are hearing that the contract extension for Connor McDavid will most likely happen after the Team Canada Orientation Camp which is August 26th to the 28th in Calgary.
The plan is to announce the contract extension before the Captain Skates begin & Training Camp starts.
We believe it could be a 2 year deal or a 4 year deal as the Edmonton Oilers already know McDavid won't be signing an 8 year extension this time around.
The conversation on AAV has gone from $16M to around $17.5M from what we've been told.
The Oilers still have other work to do to make sure this extension happens & those things are being worked on over the next 3-4 weeks as Stan Bowman & Jeff Jackson have a busy August ahead of them.
What the Speculated Term and Salary Mean for Edmonton's Future
Knowing that the Oilers wanted to keep things a secret and wait until the start of training camp; whether to stir up excitement or for other reasons, it means they knew all along that McDavid was coming back, it was just a matter of term.
If he is eschewing an eight-year deal, then going the two-year route would only raise his incredibly high stock even more, and the fact that he can make nearly 20-million yearly on his next deal potentially; he might want to bet on that two-year window.
But a four-year term gives the Oilers more of a chance to win with their current team, and if the main goal for McDavid is to win where he started, then it's going to warrant him needing to sign for a bit longer.
It's hard to imagine that Edmonton can't compete as long as McDavid is in the fray, but there are only so many Finals heartbreaks that one person can take before deciding to move on.
McDavid was his usual incredible self last season, registering 100 points in 67 games (24 goals, 76 assists) and has a mind-blowing 1,082 points in only 712 games.
So it's no secret why the Oilers want to keep McDavid, and he has every reason to stay. But it might not be for long, so the Edmonton fans may want to enjoy it as long as they can.
