It has been rumoured that the Montreal Canadiens are one of the more aggressive teams pursuing Laine, as they are looking for a top-six forward who can put the puck in the net.

The reason as to why he hasn't been traded yet has been revealed.. According to Columbus Blue Jackets' reporter Aaron Portzline, he has stated the reason is because Laine is actively in the NHL's player assistance program.

When a player is still in the assistance program, the understanding is that they won't be traded until they are out of it. The reason for this is so the player can focus on getting the help they need rather than adding an additional stressor to their lives.

The thought is that when Laine is considered to be out of the program, the Canadiens will make a push to acquire him. He matches their needs and could thrive in a hockey hotbed like Montreal.

However, Portzline isn't so sure that the trade will be as easy as once thought.

"There is probably a market out there, but it's hard for me to believe they can make the hockey trade they want to make."
.

If there isn't a hockey trade to be made, it will likely mean the potential suitors for Laine will need to give draft capital along with roster players or prospects. However, given his on-ice inconsistencies lately, the package to acquire him and his $8.7 million cap hit for the next two seasons.

Only time will tell what happens next for the rumours between Laine and Canadiens. But for now, we all just hope he gets the help needed to return to the ice.
