While the Leafs have interest, the reported asking price from Calgary has recently been revealed, and it may spell bad news for Toronto.
According to a report from TSN's Darren Dreger, this is the asking price for Tanev from the Flames.
Note: The Maple Leafs don't have a 2nd round pick for the next three seasons.
Can the Maple Leafs get a deal done for the veteran?
Tanev may not be the offensive minded defenseman that we've seen take over the league in recent years, but he's willing to put his body on the line, plays smart defensively and is a fantastic leader, and could be the absolute perfect addition, especially with his connections to GM Brad Treliving.
Sure, Toronto don't have a second round pick for three seasons, but if they can offer a third and some prospects, that may get the deal done, but with a need in net too, they may look to make this an even bigger blockbuster deal. Ultimately, Toronto will look to stay busy ahead of the March 8 trade deadline, and with Calgary now seemingly in sell mode, this may be the best time for them to capitalize and land a fantastic piece such as Tanev.
