Don Sweeney and the Boston Bruins have completely overhauled their goaltending position during the 2024 NHL offseason. The changes began with a big trade sending former Vezina Trophy winner Linus Ullmark to the Ottawa Senators.
Since then the plan has always been to sign Jeremy Swayman to a long-term deal. However, to this point a deal has not been struck between Don Sweeney and restricted free agent Jeremy Swayman.
Today was the deadline to negotiate before Jeremy Swayman had to decide if he wanted to go through the arbitration process.
The deadline came at 5 pm and something unexpected was done by Jeremy Swayman and his agents.
With 5 pm come and gone now it has been reported that Jeremy Swayman elected not to go to salary arbitration. Several sources confirmed he will forgo the process entirely.
This is puzzling on the surface as Jeremy Swayman would likely get a monster contract that would get him one year closer to unrestricted free agency. Turning down that kind of opportunity likely means a long-term extension is close between Don Sweeney and Jeremy Swayman.
The Boston Bruins clearly view Jeremy Swayman as the future of the organization. With arbitration out of the way, the two sides can work together to keep Jeremy Swayman as the cornerstone of the next era of Boston Bruins hockey.
Some fans were upset, others convinced Jeremy Swayman would join another club.
