Despite the Bruins' historic win in Philadelphia, goaltender Jeremy Swayman fought back tears postgame as he dedicated the victory to someone very special, who he had lost not long ago.
As the final horn at Wells Fargo Arena in Philadelphia rang, Swayman could be seen pointing up to the sky. His teammates quickly surrounded the young goaltender in a heartfelt group hug. In a postgame interview with Jackie Redmond of The NHL Network, the 24-year-old became emotional as he explained the reason for his gesture.
A Boston native, Red Gendron coached at the University of Maine while Swayman was the team's starting goaltender from 2017 to 2020. Gendron also held positions with the New Jersey Devils, Albany River Rats (AHL), University of Maine, University of Massachusetts, and Yale University. Sadly, he passed away unexpectedly on April 9th, 2021, at the age of 63.
With Sunday's win, Swayman matched his career-high of 23 victories, improving his stat line to a 2.22 GAA (Goals Against Average) and a .921 SV% (Save Percentage).
