After 19 incredible years in the NHL, Boston Bruins captain Patrice Bergeron called it quits on a fantastic career, and in his farewell press conference, he revealed the two main factors for the decision.
The toll on his body
Over his time in the NHL, Bergeron became renowned as one of the best two way forwards in the sport, winning an incredible six Selke Award's over that time.
Unsurprisingly, that took a massive toll on his body, as the 1294 games in the NHL were full of physicality, not to mention the toll of travelling and playing through injuries year after year for this team.
Family
The other reason for Bergeron's retirement was his family, and given the amount of time professional athletes spend away from home, this one is certainly understandable.
Bergeron and his wife have four kids together, and at the age of 38, it makes sense that he would want to spend more time with them, so we wish them all the success and happiness beyond his playing career after an incredible run with the Bruins.
