NHL Under Fire For Shocking Reffing Decision in Toronto

The Maple Leafs may be facing one of the toughest adversaries in the first round of the playoffs: the Tampa Bay Lightning.

We reported earlier that the Leafs were able to secure an emergency backup goaltender for tonight's game, thanks to a new NHL rule. However, this also means they might have to use him.

As if that wasn't enough, they may face even more challenges.

One of the referees for game #1 will be none other than Wes McCauley.

He's known for his legendary calls on the ice, but he's also not on the best terms with Sheldon Keefe.

Long story short, a couple of years ago, Keefe testified in a hearing against McCauley's brother-in-law, who are very close.

Remember when Keefe was fined because he screamed at a ref? Well, it was also McCauley.

On top of all that, the Lightning haven't lost a game with McCauley on the ice.


Everything points to the fact that he could swing the game in the Lightning's favor. We will see if the NHL referees are as unbiased as Bettman says.
