The Toronto Maple Leafs once again will be using an Emergency Backup Goalie, this time, for the playoffs. But a new rule change gives them a small upgrade at the EBUG position.
Sheldon Keefe said Tuesday that a new rule change allowed them to use Erik Kallgren, their 4th string goaltender that plays for the Marlies, as their EBUG.
This is a pretty big upgrade over Canadian university and CHL goalies.
The chances are extremely slim that the Leafs will be in need of Kallgren, but if there's one thing we know about the Stanley Cup Playoffs, it's to expect the unexpected.
And with the Leafs' unfortunate postseason luck, you never know. At least now if they need an EBUG, they have a trusted face in goal.
