In a wild turn of events on Monday, the Anaheim Ducks traded young forward Trevor Zegras to the Philadelphia Flyers.
The news was broken by NHL Insider Elliotte Friedman on X.
The trade was then officially confirmed a short time later by the Flyers official X account.
This comes minutes after NHL Insider Frank Seravalli mentioned the two teams were in discussions regarding Zegras.
Zegras, 24, has 32 points in 57 games (12G, 20A) with the Ducks this season.
The ducks will receive center
Ryan Poehling, the 45th overall pick this upcoming NHL Draft, as well as a 4th-round pick in 2026.
Poehling, 26, is coming off a season where he had 31 points in 68 games (12G, 19A) while playing solid defense for the middling Flyers.
Anaheim and Philadelphia both come out winners
Anaheim now own three picks in the second round of this year's draft, and could very well use them to bring in some more talent elsewhere.
We know that GM Pat Verbeek is going to be active this summer, and perhaps he is looking to land a bigger fish come July 1 and Zegras was the unfortunate casualty.
The Flyers end up getting one of the more exciting young players in the league who struggled with injuries the last two seasons but has the potential to be a perennial 20-goal scorer.
Poehling only makes $1.9-million and will be a free agent next summer; and this moves seems more about getting premium draft assets while not having to worry about paying Zegras in the future.
Only time will tell how this trade works out, but for now it looks like the Flyers came away with an absolute steal.
