The Panthers could be a lot nastier this season after acquiring the rights to Radko Gudas in exchange for the rights to A.J. Greer on Tuesday afternoon.

Bill Zito has a way of finding players to make his team somehow even better, stronger, faster, and most importantly nastier. He added Brady Tkachuk to the fold and now on Tuesday afternoon he added someone who Maple Leafs fans are going to groan very loudly when they hear the name: Radko Gudas.

Florida keeps getting bigger and badder as they can now add Radko Gudas to the mix

Florida acquired the veteran defender and former Anaheim Ducks captain's signing rights from Anaheim in exchange for the rights to pending free agent A.J. Greer:

Gudas, 36, is most known for injuring Auston Matthews towards the ned of the 2025-26 season, a situation that at the time angered fans and players alike though a lot of the criticism also pointed to the team's lack of a response.

He took his lumps though and managed to finish out the season despite injuries. He recorded 13 points 56 games for the Ducks last season while adding 164 hits, 87 blocks and 67 PIM in only 16:11 TOI.

Greer, 29, was a key part of Florida's 2025 Stanley Cup win and is just coming off a career year where he had 17 goals and 32 points while adding over 200 hits. He's a scrappy, mean, and sometimes dirty player (much like Gudas) so it seems both teams were looking to swap pieces that make them a little nastier overall.

Gudas now joins a list of players who are all regarded as either mean, dirty, or otherwise unpleasant to play against:

- Brady Tkachuk
- Matthew Tkachuk
- Sam Bennett
- Aaron Ekblad
- Niko Mikkola
- Brad Marchand
- Radko Gudas

Now you have a group of some pretty intense players and the Atlantic Division is going to be an absolute nightmare knowing that Florida is not only healthy, but adding more reinforcements.

Gudas to the Panthers adds a new wrinkle in Toronto and Florida's rivalry

But in them adding Gudas, it just turned the Maple Leafs and Panthers rivalry up to 11. Now with him potentially facing them in the postseason and knowing what he did to Matthews prior - it just provides another layer to get through.

Gudas is a player who hasn't won the big one yet, and he's looking to do so before his career runs out and he couldn't have chosen a better place. But it's also going to put a target on his back with teams knowing they can go after him and perhaps knock the Panthers down a peg.

If the two teams meet up in the playoffs we have to be in the mindset that Gudas may be targeting not only Matthews but perhaps Gavin McKenna, Easton Cowan, and whoever else the team decides to bring in. He can plead innocent all he wants but that hit was intentional - and he's got history.

Look for an already heated rivalry to grow even hotter if Gudas does indeed sign with the Panthers and even as a third-line option he's still going to be dangerous for Paul Maurice's lineup.

Toronto could have used Gudas themselves (as the two were partially linked) and Greer would have added a great piece to the fourth line for the Maple Leafs.

For now, they have to settle with the fact they might get to face the guy who ended their captain's season more often than they probably want to.
