With the core-four and Morgan Rielly taking up nearly 60% of the team's cap space, it seems that depth has to be the priority.
However, if the Leafs were to acquire star power winger Timo Meier, there is a path to keeping him long-term.
Per Jonas Siegel of The Athletic, with Jake Muzzin on LTIR, and the cap going up ever so slightly, Kyle Dubas and the Maple Leafs could squeeze Timo Meier in at around 8x$8.5-million.
This would definitely give them the best top-six in the league, but it would make re-signing Matthews and Nylander more difficult.
The question is, does Kyle Dubas go all-in now and deal with the consequences later?
