In a sad bit of news out of the hockey world, the Toronto Maple Leafs announced that former goaltender Bernie Parent had tragically passed away at the age of 80.
The hockey world is in mourning on Sunday afternoon as it was announced that former Maple Leafs goaltender and Hockey Hall of Famer Bernie Parent had passed away at the age of 80.
The statement on social media the team put out reads as follows:
We mourn the passing of Hall of Fame goaltender Bernie Parent.
A Maple Leaf from 1970-72, Parent shared the crease with Jacques Plante in one of the game's iconic tandems before going on to capture back-to-back Vezina and Conn Smythe Trophies, two Stanley Cups with Philadelphia, and induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame.
Our condolences go out to his family, friends, and all who admired him.
The Philadelphia Flyers also put out a tribute and noted how Parent worked hard with the youth hockey programs and growing the game:
Bernie had a deep love for Philadelphia and fans of the Flyers. He was passionate about his role as an ambassador for the Ed Snider Youth Hockey & Education, and inspired a generation of hockey fans.
He dedicated his time, energy and enthusiasm to not only grow the game but also spread joy to anyone he encountered.
Parent won back-to-back Stanley Cups with the Flyers in the mid-1970's, had his number retired by the team in 1979 and goes down as one of the greatest goaltenders of all time.
Those around the hockey world also poured in some tributes acknowledging Parent's legacy in the NHL:
Remembering Bernie Parent's Early Days With the Maple Leafs
Parent, born in Montreal, made his debut in the 1965-66 season with the Boston Bruins, before heading to Philadelphia in the late 60's.

In 64 games he went 24-25-12 with a 2.59 GAA and .915 SV%. He was then drafted by the WHA and spent one season there before Toronto traded his rights back to the Flyers and the rest is history.
For his career, Parent had a 271-198-119 record with a 2.55 GAA and .915 SV% with Boston, Toronto, Philadelphia, with one season in the WHA with the Philadelphia Blazers.
