Fans Outraged Over New Multi-Billion 12-Year NHL Deal in Canada
The NHL made a monumental deal on Monday, securing official broadcast rights with Rogers Sportsnet over the next decade plus.
While there are currently
three different avenues for fans to watch NHL hockey games in Canada (TSN, Sportsnet, Prime Video), there's a lot of discourse recently over which platform is best, or how streaming is going to affect things going forward.
Well, with the announcement made today, it seems we very much have a definitive answer, and it's making fans downright furious.
The NHL and Rogers agreed to a massive 12-year, $7.7B contract (USD) in order to broadcast NHL games, and will see the deal run until the end of the 2037 season.
It's safe to say, while it's a huge win for the NHL and for Rogers Media, it's made fans less than receptive to the news.
Fans are not only concerned about the monopolization of the NHL broadcasts, but are wondering if the issue of blackouts will still continue regardless.
It's certainly going to be a cause for discourse amongst not only fans, but analysts, current pundits, and everyone involved in the hockey media stratosphere.
There once was a time where fans would hotly anticipate nightly broadcasts, and especially with the infamous and iconic Hockey Night in Canada on Saturday nights, a lot of winter warmth came from the glow of the television set.
But the aura and allure of these broadcasts have gone by the wayside, and some are getting fed up with the same old tired takes, and it doesn't make things any easier.
There is the potential that Sportsnet and Rogers gaining the exclusive rights means they just want to have first dibs over premium games, and may end up selling off certain games and or time slots back to TSN; for a hefty price of course.
Fans get left in the dust yet again, as the NHL and Rogers end up filling their already bottomless pockets.
It can only best be summed up in one post.
