The NHL's greatest goal-scorer has reportedly admitted that he may not be finishing his career in North America as he looks to potentially head back to Russia.
While the NHL takes part in the Winter Olympics in Milan, there are many who are left out due to Russia's ban from the IOC, and it could be argued that it's truly not best of the best without guys like Alex Ovechkin and Nikita Kucherov.
The NHL's greatest goal-scorer being left out of what could be his last chance to make the Games is a tough pill to swallow for some, though he'll look to build on his legacy with the Capitals once the season resumes.
Ovechkin may not finish career in the NHL
Though, he might not be finishing his career with Washington when all is said and done.
According to a report from Puck Empire courtesy of RMNB (Russian Machine Never Breaks), the KHL and President Alexei Morozov are going to discuss the potential of Ovechkin coming back to Russia:
We talk often, see each other in the summer, and discuss various topics. A few years ago, he asked me how things are going in the KHL. He knows everything that’s going on in the league. If he decides to continue his career in the KHL, we’ll be delighted.
This comes off the heels of a report that Ovechkin would like to join Dynamo Moscow even if for a few games, just to finish his career in his homeland:
Yeah. I grew up there. I played for Dynamo. Of course, I want to play maybe one or two games. We’ll see. You never know what’s going to happen, right? Right now, I’m here and I’m enjoying my days here. We’ll see.
If Ovechkin were to leave the NHL he would do so as one of the greatest players ever, and the undisputed best goal scorer in league history. In 1,550 games so far, he has 1,671 points which includes a record 919 goals.
