As the Hockey News dressed a list of players who could earn a shot in the NHL in the future, Ian Kennedy is adamant that Canada's candidate is Eric Staal.
Before he was picked as part of Team Canada and earned the C on his jersey for the tournament, Staal signed a professional try-out agreement with the AHL's Iowa Wild. With Staal's goal to get back in the NHL.
Eric Staal hasn't played since his tenure with the Montreal Canadiens where he along with Corey Perry were outstanding on the 4th line and leadership with with the Habs. Unfortunately losing to the over powered Tampa Bay Lightning in 5 games.
This is why Ian Kennedy believes Staal is likely to earn another shot in the NHL:
«The most likely candidate to earn an NHL contract immediately following the tournament is Eric Staal. Staal notched 5 points in 4 AHL games, and should he perform well for Canada, Stanley Cup contenders will be considering the low risk acquisition of signing him to a league minimum contract. He provides veteran leadership, and brings the experience of a Stanley Cup champion to a locker room.»
Right now Eric Staal had his eyes cleary on leading team Canada to the Gold in Beijing tho the NHL players couldn't participate the players here are taking advantage of this once and a life time opportunity.
