Vatanen explained his decision and insisted it wasn't because there were no offers from NHL teams.
"It was no big deal. There were a few offers from the NHL, but I felt they just weren't good enough," said Vatanen.
"I waited all summer for something interesting to come along, but no. I haven't had terribly good seasons under my belt, so I understand that. I didn't stress about the whole thing. I was enjoying the summer and spending time with my family."
"I have to say, we'll see after this season. You can never say no. We'll see again in a year. I wanted to play in Europe now, so it wasn't a big shock," said Vatanen.
Vatanen says his decision to relocate to Europe was inspired by his new child (daughter). Despite what some may think, he said he always gave his all in the NHL.
"Yes, I would say so. There's always work to be done, sometimes a little more and sometimes a little less. Looking back now, there were some great years in the NHL. It was fun. No regrets, nothing left behind."
