According to Marc-Antoine Godin of The Athletic, here's the actual offer for Kotkaniemi in the weeks leading up to the hostile offer.
"Hurricanes general manager Don Waddell's attempts to make a trade before completing the hostile offer have been well documented. Our understanding is that the offer was for the two draft picks plus an additional pick, or the ability for the Habs to select a prospect of their choosing - other than Seth Jarvis - to add to the deal. That would mean a prospect like Dominik Bokk, Ryan Suzuki, Noel Gunler or Jamieson Rees could have been added to the deal."

So that means that in addition to receiving the two compensatory picks they did, the Habs could have also added either an extra draft pick or a decent prospect to their bank by agreeing to the deal. We're talking about a youngster like Dominik Bokk (25th overall in 2018), Ryan Suzuki (28th overall in 2019), Noel Gunler (41st overall in 2020) or Jamieson Rees (44th overall in 2019).
