In celebration of the past, present, and future contributions of local Indigenous peoples, the Montreal Canadiens will begin a land acknowledgment at every home game on October 16.
A land acknowledgement pays homage to Indigenous peoples and acknowledges their historical and contemporary presence. In order to continue the process of healing, we must first recognise and respect Indigenous peoples. To begin the season, PA announcer Michel Lacroix will read the land acknowledgment. In recognition of and support for local First Nations and Indigenous communities, the Canadiens will reveal many initiatives throughout the year.
The team plans a more official pregame ceremony later in the season to coincide with Carey Price's return to action, allowing the Anahim Lake, BC native to attend.
Thanks to the Val-d'Or Native Friendship Centre for their excellent assistance and support. The organisation hopes that by doing this, it would motivate people to help Indigenous communities.
