According to Friedman, the problem is that their offer is significantly less than what Campbell is looking for, and it "doesn't sound like Campbell is coming back."
Campbell is likely seeking for something in the 4-5 million dollar area every season, which is nearly double what the Leafs initially offered.
I believe $5 million is excessive for a player who has played for a season and a half and will be 31 by the middle of next season. Campbell has a 48-12-8 record with a save percentage of.917, a GAA of 2.39, and 7 shutouts in 71 games over the past two seasons. Not bad numbers, but his health is a concern because he has yet to stay healthy for an entire season.
The Leafs will most likely try to trade Mrazek, who earns $3.8 million a season, and give Erik Kallgren or
Joseph Woll the backup role. Keeping Campbell will be easier if Mrazek's 3.8 million is released.
Campbell and the Leafs could agree on a four-year agreement worth between 3.8 and 4.4 million dollars per season, as this will be Campbell's only big payoff.
