Surprising contender making a big push for Jets Nikolaj Ehlers
The Winnipeg Jets sit in a strange spot in the West, and after a playoff failure, it appears the Hurricanes are looking to swoop in and land Nikolaj Ehlers.
After a disappointing finish to their 2024 Stanley Cup Playoffs appearance, the Winnipeg Jets could be looking to change direction going forward, and given that he's reportedly not interested in an extension, Nikolaj Ehlers has become a genuine trade candidate. There's been several teams linked to the 28-year old forward, but now it appears as though one has emerged as the favourite, with a recent report linking the Carolina Hurricanes as the front runner at this stage.
According to Stefen Rosner of The Hockey News, the Carolina Hurricanes are heavily interested in Nikolaj Ehlers and are actively pursuing him.
In 82 games in 2023/24 with Winnipeg, Ehlers continued his consistent run at the NHL level, tallying 25 goals and 61 points, the highest point total of his career since 2016-17. It's unclear just what the market will be for Ehlers, but at this point the Jets have continued to engage interest in him, and when they begin actively shopping him, we should see several more teams involved.
Right now however, all signs point to the Carolina Hurricanes adding yet another veteran winger to their lineup to push for a Stanley Cup in the tough Eastern Conference.
