Rumours were circulating earlier this year regarding Peter Laviolette, the head coach for the Washington Capitals. It was rumoured that the Capitals would be offering Laviolette a contract extension, at the time, the Capitals had a playoff spot, and it seemed that they might have been able to compete for another Stanley Cup. Since these rumours began to circulate, the Capitals have fallen in the standings, they are currently 6 points away from a playoff spot.

Capitals Might Get Rid of Laviolette

The rumours that Laviolette might get an extension have disappeared. They have been replaced by new rumours, according to Emily Kaplan of ESPN, it seems that the Capitals have their eyes on a current member of the Leafs coaching staff.
The 41-year-old is one of the buzziest names on the coaching circuit — and that's even before he landed in Toronto, center of the hockey media universe. A few respondents said to monitor Carbery as an option for the Capitals should they make a change. Carbery is thought highly of in the Caps organization after three years leading its top minor league affiliate, the Hershey Bears. He has been a quick riser after winning ECHL Coach of the Year (2014) and AHL Coach of the Year (2021). Washington wanted to keep him on, but Carbery took an assistant job with the Maple Leafs in 2021. Since Carbery took over running the power play, Toronto has the league's second-best man-up unit (behind Edmonton)."

This is not the first time that Spencer Carbery has interviewed for a Head Coach vacancy. Last summer, reports stated that Carbery was the leading candidate for the San Jose Sharks coaching job. However, the Sharks hired David Quinn.
Carbery already has some experience with the Capitals, he used to work for their AHL affiliate. A lot of changes will happen throughout the summer, especially with the Leafs. If the Leafs cannot make it past the first round of the playoffs, the Leafs might replace Keefe next season.
