William Nylander's next contract will certainly be expensive but the reported contract for a comparable spells bad news for Toronto.

Aho Set To Extend

Per NHL Trade Rumors, Carolina Hurricanes star Sebastian Aho will be signing an 8-year extension carrying an AAV of $9.5 million per year.
Aho is coming off of a season that saw him score 67 points in 75 games which was a relatively down year for him.

What This Means For The Leafs

The Maple Leafs are going to be put in a very tough spot once this contract becomes official. William Nylander is coming off a year where he scored 40 goals and 87 total points, which is more than Aho has ever scored in either category.
Aho on the other hand had 36 goals and 67 points which is 20 less than Nylander. Now it should be noted that Aho played 7 fewer games but if his pace is accounted for, he would have scored 39 goals and 73 points in an 82-game season, 14 points fewer than Nylander.
This will give Nylander even more leverage considering how he has displayed he is better than Aho this past season. However, the two players are closer than last season's point totals suggest.
Aho has outproduced Nylander in all but two of the seasons he has been in the NHL, his rookie year and last year.
At the end of the day, Aho may be a solid contract comparable for William Nylander but only time will tell what happens.
