Why Mitch Marner Deserves To Win The Prestigious Award He Was Just Nominated For
Coming into the 2024-25 NHL season, Mitch Marner was
under a lot of pressure when it came to his performance and how he would do in a contract year. Would he crack under the weight and put in a substandard effort? Or will he explode for nearly 100 points and firmly give himself the best chance at a megadeal?
It's clear that the latter has been what's happened and with only one point away from the illustrious century mark has got to leave Marner feeling great. However, a lot of attention should also be drawn to what he also does off the ice.
A huge part of the Toronto community as a whole, Marner's charitable endeavors and leadership has brought him some great recognition.
Being nominated for the King Clancy Award, the nomination (as decided upon by his teammates) recognizes Marner for all he does for the city while not leading the team on the ice.
The award is given to "the player who best exemplifies leadership qualities on and off the ice and has made a noteworthy humanitarian contribution in his community."
That certainly describes Marner. Leading the
Marner Assist Foundation, his goal is to make sure every kid has the resources possible in order to best succeed in life. From life coaching, social care, education, and raising environmental awareness; Marner wants everyone to flourish both on and off the ice.
Some of the organizations that Marner's charity has helped with include 360 Degree Kids; a youth crisis organization, Jumpstart, The Salvation Army, and Second Harvest.
Marner also hosts an "All-Star" Event as a way to raise money for the charity, and often finds NHL alumni, current teammates and hockey personalities come together for a good cause.
The event has raised over $2-million since its inception, and per the website strives to offer:
Youth and their families the chance to engage with the ultimate hockey pros on an up-close and personal level.
As proud Canadians, we've cultivated a deep love for hockey, which taught us invaluable lessons such as discipline, dedication, and commitment. The Marner All-Star Invitational brings all hockey lovers under one roof for an incredible cause.
We are so proud to have raised over $2 million since the inception of this event. The need for children living in under-resourced communities has grown significantly, and with your support, we can continue to #MakeAnAssist together.
Marner also stresses an importance on mental health, and in addition to that All-Star event, created 'Sink the Stigma'; an event that raises money for mental health resources and awareness for youths aged 16-25.
While Marner obviously isn't doing all of this by himself, it's a true testament to how much he loves the city and the community. They've welcomed him with open arms since arriving and he's been trying to pay it back ever since.
We don't often see Marner's impact off the ice but it's clear his teammates do. Marner has been having a heck of a year on the ice, but we can't forget just how much of an impact he's made for the community, and I doubt that's going to change even if he ends up heading somewhere else.
