MLSE CEO Keith Pelley made a rare appearance at practice and addressed the playoff situation by confirming he'll do what it takes to help the team win.
There's been a lot of discussion about whether or not the Toronto Maple Leafs are going to be buyers or sellers this season. They have some great assets they could deal away, but with the front office afraid to lose a playoff spot -- who knows their thought process.
With less than two weeks to go there isn't much time and you would hope that the team took the Olympic break to reassess things and focus on what needs improving and what they can afford to deal away without sacrificing the chance to make the postseason.
Keith Pelley promises 'whatever it takes' to help Maple Leafs win
We don't really know what they are going to do, however it at least sounds like the head honchos are willing to work with the team.
MLSE CEO Keith Pelley made his presence known at Maple Leafs practice, and explained the team's focus going forward.
Pelley's response is leaning towards helping the team make the playoffs and seemingly -- by any means necessary:
The 2025-26 season for the Maple Leafs, so far, has been a series of ups and downs, and unfortunately with a number of key injuries that have affected the team, we are not currently in the position we had anticipated, but that is professional sports.
This team has made the playoffs nine seasons in a row, the longest streak in the NHL and something to be proud of, but as I have said since joining the organization, our goal is to not just make the playoffs, and we will do whatever is needed for this team to make the next step.

Keep in mind as well, this was a letter to season ticket holders who were being pressed to renew for 2026-27. With no clear direction, this is something that may rub long-time fans the wrong way.
Can Keith Pelley even do anything to help Toronto?
So realistically, how much can Pelley really do with the restrictions Toronto already has in place?
Sure the team can make a move or two and bring in a name like Robert Thomas or Dougie Hamilton, but where do they find the money? This isn't the Blue Jays who can spend hundreds of millions of dollars to bring in whoever they want.
Toronto barely has enough cap space to make a free agent signing, let alone take on a huge deal.
Then you have some pretty bad contracts being glued to the books and now you're looking at what? Trading William Nylander? Does someone take Matthew Knies away and then you lose a key piece of your future?
There's so many different holes and gaps that need filling it's hard to know where to start. Do you build from the blueline up? Do you focus on a partner for Auston Matthews? What happens to your goaltending situation?
As you can see there are so many questions that can't be answered all at once, and Pelley, for as much as he wants to help the team can't really promise he can do whatever it takes.
The Maple Leafs dug themselves into a big hole throughout the years in their hope of winning the ultimate prize.
Pelley's going to try and dig them out, but he may need a backhoe instead of a shovel to get this figured out.
