Today a new comment has come out from Tyler Bertuzzi's agent Todd Reynolds where he commented on how negotiations on an extension are going.

The Toronto Maple Leafs brought in Tyler Bertuzzi last offseason along with Max Domi to bring more of a physical and tough-to-play-against edge. Now heading into the 2024 offseason both players are in need of an extension. To this point talks had been kept quiet between all sides. Today that all changed as Tyler Bertuzzi's agent spoke about his situation.

Maple Leafs other needs might get in the way of re-signing Tyler Bertuzzi

During his comments on the situation, Todd Reynolds said that Tyler Bertuzzi would like to return but understands the team has other needs that they will address first.

We've had productive talks, said Reynolds. But the player realizes that there are other areas for the team to address. We'll see where it goes.

This quote makes it seem like the other needs the Toronto Maple Leafs have could prevent the team from keeping Tyler Bertuzzi. If he makes it to free agency there will likely be a healthy market of teams wanting to sign Tyler Bertuzzi. This means the Maple Leafs will need to address those other issues before free agency or risk losing players.

Maple Leafs need to get their priorities straight before Free Agency

With free agency just a few short weeks away the Toronto Maple Leafs have a lot to get sorted out. Their main priority should be deciding the fate of Mitch Marner in Toronto. Reports have indicated the Maple Leafs could look to spend in free agency if they trade Mitch Marner so knowing how much salary cap space they'll have to spend is crucial

If Mitch Marner gets dealt, the Leafs could make a run at signing Jake Guentzel

Then getting a goaltender to pair with Joseph Woll or at least a plan to address this.

Once these things are done the extensions for Tyler Bertuzzi and Max Domi become paramount. The Maple Leafs had better depth scoring this season and much of that can be attributed to these two. Extending them would provide some stability to a lineup that has seen constant change outside of the core 4 in the last couple of seasons.
