General Manager Brad Treliving made sure to create internal competition in the goaltender unit at training camp despite Ilya Samsonov's departure. By re-signing Matt Murray and getting Anthony Stolarz on free agency, he added some challenge for Joseph Woll and Dennis Hildeby. Both goalies are in the Leafs' long-term plans, and this will only help their development.
We don't know yet where Stolarz will play this season. However, if he were to be sent down to the AHL, he'd need to clear waivers, as per his two-year, $2,500,000 AAV contract.
Stolarz seems convinced that he'll remain in Toronto, as he just released pictures of his new mask with the colors of the Maple Leafs (and Marlies).
Check it out:
The Maple Leafs are back on the ice tonight, and Stolarz should be in action with that mask. It'll be interesting to see if the goalie can repeat his performance from the Leafs' last game, where he stopped 15 of the 16 shots fired at him by the Ottawa Senators in Tuesday night's 2-1 loss.
The challenge shouldn't be too hard for the Leafs, as the Montreal Canadiens come into Toronto with a lot of missing key players. Standout prospect Lane Hutson will be there, but Cole Caufield, Nick Suzuki, Juraj Slafkovsky, and Patrick Laine all remained in Montreal for Saturday night's game.
Also, head coach Craig Berube decided to send out what should look like his three defensive pairs to defend Stolarz and Murray. Indeed, Chris Tanev, Morgan Rielly, Oliver Ekman-Larsson, Jake McCabe, Simon Benoit, and Timothy Liljegren will do all they can to stop the Canadiens from scoring.
