The continuation of the David Kampf saga has hit one critical roadblock according to Elliotte Friedman, and it's the key reason behind what's holding things up.

The headlines have been dominated recently by David Kampf and his unknown future with the Toronto Maple Leafs.
First, he decided to step away from the team to contemplate things, which turned into a suspension, with a resolution expected shortly.
Whether it be a trade, a contract buyout, termination or he just heads back to the Marlies; something is going to happen and this situation is going to get resolved.

Elliotte Friedman Explains the Signing-Bonus Complication

However, Elliotte Friedman's latest comments show that perhaps there was something really holding things back.
Speaking on the Saturday Headlines segment on CBC's Hockey Night in Canada broadcast, the noted insider spoke about the situation and how that it was Kampf's contract causing issues -- mainly his signing bonus:
With regards to the David Kampf situation, from what I've heard the main issue surrounding a holdup is the fact he has a signing bonus that he may need to give back.

The league and NHLPA are currently looking into it, and they hope to have a resolution come Monday.
Kampf's disgruntled nature is understandable given that he has never really played in the AHL and has clear aspirations to continue his career at the NHL level.
However that gets done, it's going to come at a cost either for Kampf or the Maple Leafs.

Why Monday Might Be the Day the Leafs Finally Cut Ties

If Kampf terminates his deal, he forfeits salary as well as potentially paying back a portion or all of his $1.325-million signing bonus, and while that's not a ton of money; for a depth forward like Kampf it is.
They would love this option because it affords them a lot more space to make a move, or be able to have their injured return and not completely destroy their cap situation.
If Toronto buys him out, they are going to have to pay a buyout rate of $1.683-million and only saying just a shade over $700,000. It's not that much money and he would be on their books still.
A trade would be great because it would allow Toronto to recoup some assets, however the market is pretty quiet right now and teams aren't exactly jumping at the chance to bring in a $2.4-million fourth-liner.
All of these are very possible scenarios for Kampf and the Maple Leafs, and while there is no animosity between the two parties, it seems like they would rather part sooner than later.
When fans wake up on Monday, all eyes are going to be glued to social media as we find out the conclusion of David Kampf's time in Toronto.
