Toronto Maple Leafs GM John Chayka explained why he traded Joseph Woll to the Philadelphia Flyers and noted it was their strength in numbers that led to the deal.
On Tuesday, the Toronto Maple Leafs traded Joseph Woll and Simon Benoit to the Philadelphia Flyers for Samuel Ersson, Emil Andrae and a 2026 third-round pick. It was a way to open up some cap and roster space while also getting younger and more mobile on the blueline.
It was a move that stunned many around the league and some are wondering exactly what the team was thinking. Fans were perplexed given that Anthony Stolarz may have been the better option but given he may not have had as much value; it may have been much harder to do in general.
They aren't at a loss though, as not only is Ersson NHL-capable but the team still has Dennis Hildeby and Artur Akhtyamov ready to take over and it's why John Chayka felt confident in making the move.
John Chayka explains mindset behind trading Joseph Woll to Philadelphia
Chayka explained the move in a short interview after the deal was struck, and explained that dealing from a position of strength allowed him to make the move in order to get better and younger on the backend, with the potential to have a solid goalie in the process:
Yeah, I think it's good in any good situation where you have organizational depth, you want the young players to force your hand a bit, and certainly the way that they played Dennis at the NHL level, even with AA (Artur Akhtyamov) with what he's doing with the Marlies right now, as a manager; definitely causes you to take notice and make plans.
And like I said, we were looking to optimize our pipeline. We felt like we had a lot of similarities, and we also had the waiver situation. This allows us to maintain some organizational depth while also, like I said, getting a young defenseman that we really like and a draft pick.
But the way those guys are playing and certainly AA right now through the playoffs, is something that we've taken notice of.

With the rapid progression of Akhtyamov in the AHL and Hildeby already proving that he can handle an NHL workload, it made one of the two veterans expendable. Stolarz is a fantastic goalie whose only concern is that he can't stay healthy. But even when he was injured in his debut season, he was great - last year something just felt off.
So the team is taking a bit of a gamble that he's able to rekindle that old form and manage to keep himself on the ice as long as possible.
Did John Chayka's trade actually accomplish what he wanted to do?
Yes and no. On one hand, he certainly improved defensively and offensively with the addition of Andrae, a 24-year old offensive defender who isn't afraid to get dirty but also has the vision and playmaking to boot. He marks an improvement over Toronto's depth defenders and could be a great piece much like Troy Stecher was.
On the other, he lost a crucial part of the locker room with Woll and someone who has bailed the team out more often than not. Woll was instrumental in keeping Toronto alive against Boston in 2023-24 and if not for a freak injury then things may have been different that year.
He also was the main player when Stolarz was out both in 2024-25 and 2025-26 and did everything he could with what was in front of him. He was also a dedicated charity man who did a lot for the Toronto community, so they lose a lot with him leaving.
If Chayka was doing this as a way to open up cap and roster space, then this may not be the only domino that falls in the coming days. We're expecting a new head coach, the draft is right around the corner, and who knows what else Chayka has in store.
But for now he seems confident that he made the right move trading Woll to the Flyers. All we can do is wait and see if it pays off or if his first big deal blows up in his face.
