Steven Lorentz and Philippe Myers learn their fates with the Maple Leafs

As the 2 PM waiver deadline passes, both Steven Lorentz and Philippe Myers have learned their fates after being placed on the wire by Toronto on Thursday.

Thursday afternoon came with a lot of roster movement for the Maple Leafs as they assigned 9 players to the Marlies including Ben Danford, as well as loaning out Tinus Luc Koblar back to Rogle BK as he continues his growth over in Sweden.

But the waiver wire came with a surprising name as Steven Lorentz - a fan favourite - was placed there on Thursday alongside depth defender Philippe Myers as well as six others.

But now that 2 PM has passed, both men know their fates when it comes to their future with the Maple Leafs.

Lorentz and Myers, along with the rest of the Maple Leafs who were waived all cleared, meaning they will be assigned to the Toronto Marlies of the AHL:

Lorentz, 30, had 18 points in 71 games for the Maple Leafs in 2025-26, coming into the team in 2024-25 on a PTO and signing an extension later that summer.

Myers, 29, was brought in as a steady right-handed depth option who never really got his footing in Toronto. Despite playing 39 games last year, he only recorded two assists and was a minus-10 in only 14:33 TOI.

What this means for Lorentz and Myers

For Lorentz, it's an unfortunate turn of events considering he seemed like a shoe-in when it came to the Maple Leafs' bottom-six. But the team made several big changes that made his potentially redundant, so he's headed to the AHL.

Hopefully this doesn't turn into a David Kampf situation where Lorentz is unhappy about his place in the AHL and wants out, though we have to wait and see how things will play out as the Marlies have their preseason games starting this weekend and it's likely he'll be called upon first in case of any issues.

Myers is more likely to be a mainstay for the Marlies more than Lorentz, and the Maple Leafs are already pretty stacked defensively, so unless things go haywire; he's sticking in the AHL. It's not a bad gig, and he already won a Calder Cup with the team last year, so he brings some familiarity back to the team.

It's interesting though that no one claimed Lorentz given his defensive ability but that just means the Maple Leafs have a little bit more insurance as they head into a critical 2026-27 season.
