We might be getting ready to see another slew of trades according to NHL Insider John Shannon, as he believes the market is ready to kick back into gear.
Although the 2025 offseason has seen its fair share of wild trades and massive signings, there's been quite a lull since the beginning of July. We're three weeks into the month, with several names still in play and a few free agents kicking around.
2025 offseason to get a second wind
Things are hoping to pick up soon, and according to NHL Insider John Shannon, the market is expected to heat up both with the trade markets and free agency.
Speaking on 880 CHED's Inside Sports, Shannon was forward in his thoughts that the market is bound to become active once again, and once the first domino falls, others are sure to follow:
I still think we're going to see a bump of trades coming, and so what we're also then gonna see is a second wave of free agent signings; guys like Roslovic and Olofsson are gonna be in a position, they will get contracts.
There are a ton of teams who could be looking to finalize their roster or make cap dumps, and Toronto is at the top of that list.
Toronto one of the focal points of a new wave of moves this summer
The team is still searching for a top-six forward either by trade market or hoping they can sign Olofsson or Roslovic, but are also currently looking for suitors to take on players like
David Kampf,
Calle Jarnkrok, and potentially
Max Domi.
There's also been
some rumors surrounding
Morgan Rielly and whether or not he's still going to be a part of the team come October. While it looks like he will, this is the NHL after all: Anything can happen.
It's also going to be a matter of whether Brad Treliving even has enough assets to get things done. If they want to sign Roslovic or Olofsson,
they do have $2.93-million to work with, but they'd have to sell them on the team to make up for the lack of salary.
If
Cody Ceci can get $4.5-million a year, and
Jeff Skinner signed for $3-million; that kind of sets the precedent. Players are getting paid, and if a team can throw an extra million dollars into a deal, that's a huge advantage.
They can trade players to make room, sure, but they haven't found any buyers, and while waivers would help a bit; do they wanna bury someone like Kampf with the Marlies and take away a spot there?
Clearly they need to add one more piece to the roster, and it seems like only a matter of time before they do.
But is it going to be enough? Not only to win, but will it be enough for the fans?
