Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Jake McCabe was the victim of a gnarly scene after being struck by a high stick from Kent Johnson of the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Early in tonight's game between the Columbus Blue Jackets and Toronto Maple Leafs, defenseman Jake McCabe took a stick to the face from Kent Johnson.

This led to a double-minor penalty on Johnson, as he drew blood from McCabe's face. It was a truly scary scene, and fans were horrified on social media.

At this time, it appears as though McCabe is going to be okay. That said, it doesn't take away from just how scary this scene was.

A hard night in Columbus

The Toronto Maple Leafs are already playing in a hostile environment right now when you consider how Kirill Marchenko is being booed every time he touches the puck.

Furthermore, the Blue Jackets managed to score early in the game, although, ironically enough, it was Marchenko who tied things back up.

Overall, it has been an interesting night for the Leafs, who are trying to show the rest of the NHL that they can get a winning streak going.

They defeated the San Jose Sharks last night, and now they are in the middle of trying to string together their first winning streak of the season thus far.

As for McCabe, he will likely be evaluated during the intermission, and from there, the team will decide whether or not he gets to continue the next 40 minutes.

If one thing is for certain, it is that the Leafs cannot afford more injuries to their blue line, especially with Chris Tanev already out of the lineup.

This remains a developing story.
