Reports Show that Auston Matthews May Be Better than Ovechkin
Auston Matthews is the talk of the town in Toronto and likely will continue to be as long as he is a Maple Leaf. But just how good has he been?
Matthews the Great
Everyone knows that Matthews is a generational goal-scoring talent capable of putting up insane numbers.
Since 2016, Matthews is 1st in goals and 2nd in game-winning goals. His goals per game average is 7th highest, ever, behind only Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux, Mike Bossy, Brett Hull, Jari Kurri, and Teemu Selanne.
What's more interesting though, is that his .62 goals per game is just a bit higher than Alexander Ovechkin's 0.61.
Ovechkin is widely considered to be the greatest goal scorer, potentially in NHL history. However, Matthews seems to have him beat in this category.
Highest Goals/Game from a player in the first 7 years of their career in the modern NHL:
0.87 Gretzky
0.80 Lemieux
0.78 Mike Bossy
0.78 Brett Hull
0.68 Jari Kurri
0.65 Selanne
0.62 Auston Matthews 34
0.62 Luc Robitaille
0.61 Alex Ovechkin
One of the most efficient. Ever.
Consisentcy is Key
Auston Matthews has never recorded less than 34 goals in a season. He has won 2 Rocket Richard Trophies, 1 Hard Trophy and a Ted Lindsay Award.
Auston Matthews is 1 goal away from 300, a major milestone in his career. He will be the 8th quickest to achieve the feat, just behind Ovechkin.
