Today a new report has revealed that Mitch Marner could follow in the footsteps of former Maple Leafs legend Mats Sundin when it comes to a potential trade.
This summer there is an expectation that Mitch Marner will be traded by the Toronto Maple Leafs. His contract is set to end after this upcoming season and his style of play does not mesh with new head coach Craig Berube. That along with the disappointing playoff performance from Mitch Marner has made a trade the ideal scenario.
Listen to the difference between Craig Berube, and Mitch Marner.
Berube demands passion, emotion, and inspiration.
Marner doesn't have the willpower.

However, one reporter believes that Mitch Marner could take an approach similar to Mats Sundin. In 2008 Mats Sundin was in the final year of his contract and like Mitch Marner had a no-trade clause. The organization worked out a scenario in which Mats Sundin could pick his destination and it would be a win-win for both sides.
However, when it came to the trade deadline Mats Sundin decided he wanted to see the season through with the Toronto Maple Leafs. This led to all trades being shut down. That upcoming offseason Mats Sundin would briefly retire before coming back with the Vancouver Canucks. This also meant the Toronto Maple Leafs came away with nothing. This is the same scenario that reporter Howard Berger sees coming to fruition.
By waiving the no–movement privilege negotiated in good faith with the previous administration. And, trust me, barring a disaster, the result will be the same in this case, Marner choosing to remain in a Toronto jersey through the end of his pact. Thereby eligible to walk, next summer, as an unrestricted free agent. As did the big Swede, 16 years ago (only the calendar changes here in Leafs Land).
This will be a situation to watch heading into the upcoming season. GM Brad Treliving will have to consider his options carefully and work in partnership with Mitch Marner and his agent to find the proper solution.
