Cayden Primeau found himself back on the waiver wire on Wednesday and it brings back a time for Maple Leafs fans they would much rather forget.
The NHL waiver deadline hit on Wednesday as teams continue to make early season moves. The reigning Stanley Cup Champions are one of those teams, and they aren't wasting time on making sure they have who they want.
Hurricanes place former Maple Leafs goalie Primeau on waivers
On Wednesday the Hurricanes placed goaltender Cayden Primeau on waivers, ending his time with the club. Primeau, 27, spent the majority of his time with Carolina's AHL team after being claimed off waivers from the Maple Leafs in 2025-26.
-
Prior to Toronto he spent six years in Montreal where he recorded a 13-24-7 record with a 3.69 GAA and .884 SV%.
For Toronto he appeared in three games, going 2-1-0 with a. 4.30 GAA and .838 SV%. He was picked up as insurance for the Maple Leafs as they dealt with injuries to Anthony Stolarz and Joseph Woll, but he was waived shortly after appearing in those three contests.
Maple Leafs fans are probably holding their breath a little bit as the last time Primeau hit waivers, he was picked up by the club but given his lack of production and Toronto feeling comfortable in the crease - fans should be able to rest easy.
Does Primeau have another chance at an NHL job?
Well, it is going to be a little difficult for him to get work at the NHL level given his production last year, and he couldn't secure a backup or even third-string job with the Hurricanes.
There are teams like Edmonton and Buffalo who are dealing with goaltending injuries, and they could look to Primeau as a stop-gap option for the interim but they are risking a potential rough stretch with him in net.
Any team that does want to place a claim on Primeau will have 24 hours to do so, at which point he will then be assigned to the Chicago Wolves (AHL).
There certainly is a small chance that Primeau will find himself on an NHL team again but as of now, it's a waiting game for one of the worst goaltenders in recent memory for the Maple Leafs, and it's very likely they stay far, far away from adding him again.
Do you think Cayden Primeau will find an NHL job?
