At the Leafs Legends Charity Golf Tournament on Monday, captain Auston Matthews delivered a rousing celebratory speech that could be a sign of his leadership quality.

As training camp is set to open up starting today, the Toronto Maple Leafs have a lot of questions about how they will approach this season but while there is some debate, there is also a ton of anticipation and excitement.
Back to full health, the team is looking to make a statement in the Atlantic yet again and with some teams finding themselves with a few more roadblocks ahead; things could get very interesting.

Auston Matthews' Leadership Qualities On Full Display Ahead of 2025-26 Season

Which is why it's so great that before the season begins we're seeing a ton of camaraderie between teammates as they hit the links for the Leafs Legends Charity Golf Classic on Monday.
But in that bonding experience mixed in with some genuinely hilarious behind-the-scenes looks for fans lay something deeper: Auston Matthews' true leadership qualities.
In an essentially meaningless scrimmage between himself and his group of misfits vs. former captain John Tavares, he took the time to celebrate his teammates for helping him to victory:
Whole team effort today and nice to take home the win.

Did he just play in a golf tournament or did he just come off the ice after a regular season game?

Why Auston Matthews' Comments Matter

It's that type of leadership and attention to his teammates that made him the right choice to be the captain last season over potentially Mitch Marner; a player who seems to have been completely forgotten about and by proxy bringing the team closer.
This season is certainly going to be a test for Matthews without his old running mate, and coming off a rough year filled with injuries he should be motivated and healthy; a dangerous combination.
Last season, Matthews put up 78 points in 67 games (33 goals, 45 assists) but put up some of his worst scoring numbers and was just coming off a historic 69-goal campaign.
If there is one thing to look forward to this season, it's that the Toronto Maple Leafs are as close as ever it seems, and that can only mean good things going forward for a group that is going to depend heavily on each other to succeed.
