Rookie sensation Matthew Schaefer is going to have nearly a thousand people in attendance vs. the Maple Leafs as the Hamilton, Ontario native is looking to use that momentum to continue his dominance; which is exactly what Toronto needs.

Taking the league by storm, there's a sense that Schaefer isn't just your typical elite defensive prospect but someone who is a generational talent. John Tavares believes so and knows all the pressure that comes with being a franchise talent:
He's not just a franchise player but he's certainly put himself in the conversation to be a generational type of talent.

That's exactly the reason why there's so much attention around Schaefer and now being front and centre of hockey's Mecca on Tuesday night, he's going to have no shortage of supporters:
Asked #Isles Matthew Schaefer how many people he's expecting for tomorrow's game vs. #LeafsForever:

"Honestly, we have a box for a lot of people that I'm super close with."

Total coming in support: "Could be very close to 1,000." - Stefan Rosner 03/17/26

That's great news for a guy coming into the season with 48 points including 20 goals and is looking to pounce on a fractured Maple Leafs defence.
Not to mention, it is going to be a very special affair for the rookie. Not only was he a die-hard Leafs fan growing up, but his grandmother will also be in attendance to see not only her grandson's first game - but first one ever:
This actually could be her first NHL game ever, and it'll be her first time watching me in the NHL. - Matthew Schaefer

How can it get any better than that?

Matthew Schaefer is positioned to dominate this game as the Islanders exploit a broken Toronto defense

If Toronto thought they were going to have trouble handling the likes of Rasmus Dahlin and Quinn Hughes, Schaefer is another beast. It's like watching a winger out there at times, and his offensive ceiling is through the roof (no pun intended).
But he's also added 94 blocks so he's willing to put his body on the line. It's hard to imagine that he's 18-years-old and not some wily veteran with a few years in the bank.
Plus, his story is a wonderful tale of triumph and perseverance which has made his tear through the NHL even more impressive. Schaefer is someone the NHL is going to look at and say 'This is the face of a new era.' He inspires, he leads, he's clearly talented - it's the whole package.
And who is Toronto really going to put up against him to shut him down? Their best defensive player is Auston Matthews and he's gone.
Morgan Rielly and Brandon Carlo? Pray Oliver Ekman-Larsson finds new legs against someone literally half his age?
Good luck boys, it's a tough task.

The Maple Leafs must give in and prioritize a bottom 5 finish to secure a resilient future

Good, let him run rampant over you Toronto. Not only does his supporters deserve a show, but you're giving yourself another chance to secure that 2026 first-rounder.
The Maple Leafs seemed to forget the stakes recently after putting in strong efforts against Anaheim, Buffalo, and Minnesota; taking two out of three.
While that would be great, this isn't early November and Toronto is nowhere near a playoff spot. Picking up wins now is useless and only serves to ruin your chances of a future superstar.
The Islanders are clearly inspired by Schaefer's presence and turned things around in a heap which is what Toronto is aiming to do, but winning games you shouldn't be is a bad start.
As it stands, the Maple Leafs would get the eight pick if odds were perfect. That means Boston gets the pick, Toronto is left empty-handed and wondering why they decided to start playing hockey 68 games into the season.
While there's all this talk about setting the team up for next year to make sure Auston Matthews sticks around, you need to think bigger picture too. His contract is up in 2028, and if he feels the changes aren't enough - he's gone.
Then what? They have no captain, they have no superstar prospect, and they have no one to blame for it except themselves.
